Snow Emergency in Bavaria: THW personnel have been active since Friday evening due to heavy snowfall causing chaos.

Several teams from the THW (Technical Relief Organization) are currently deployed throughout southern Bavaria, assisting cities and municipalities in assessing the snow situation and exploring potential deployment sites.

The heavy snowfall, which has persisted since last night, has prompted the counties of Rosenheim and Miesbach to establish a leadership group for disaster control (FuGK). The THW is advising these counties on further procedures to ensure effective management of the situation.

In addition, THW construction experts are assessing the current risk of building collapses and advising on necessary measures to mitigate such risks.

Currently, 18 Bavarian local associations are in action, including Rosenheim, Landsberg, Miesbach, Bad Aibling, Lindenberg, Sonthofen, Kempten, Altötting, Muhldorf, Simbach, Ergolding, Landshut, Freising, Munich-West, Munich-Land, Marktschwaben, Fürstenfeldbruck, and Dachau.

The THW, a federal voluntary emergency service with over 80,000 volunteers nationwide, half of whom are operational personnel, has been in action for over 12 hours to combat the snowfall.

In Munich, 40 THW helpers are clearing heavy snow and slush from the roof of the airport using shovels to prevent collapse. They are wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent falls.

Around 70 THW personnel from the local associations of Lindenberg, Solnhofen, and Kempten are clearing the snow from the roof of Oberstaufen station to prevent collapse. They use telescopic and wheel loaders, as well as shovels.

Unfortunately, many trucks on federal roads and motorways are stranded due to the snow. THW personnel from Munich, Fürstenfeldbruck, and Starnberg are clearing the trucks from the snow and trying to keep traffic flowing. They are on standby with special teams to be able to help quickly and effectively.

In the train area, THW personnel from the Landsberg region assisted in the evacuation of 50 people from a stranded train and provided them with food and warm drinks.

The THW is a sought-after supporter for fire services, police, aid organizations, and others due to its expertise and diverse experiences.

However, specific information about which cities and municipalities in Bavaria are affected by the THW deployments due to the recent snow event since yesterday evening is not currently available.

For further inquiries, contact the THW Bavarian State Association at [email protected] or 089 159 151 441. The THW is also deployed worldwide on behalf of the federal government for technical and logistical assistance within the framework of the EU's civil protection mechanism, as well as on behalf of UN organizations.
