Social media post by Florida football player Brendan Bett offering an apology on Instagram, following an incident involving spitting during a University of South Florida game
Florida Gators Football Player Brendan Bett Spits on Opponent in Controversial Incident
In a shocking turn of events during a football game between the Florida Gators and the South Florida Bulls, redshirt sophomore player Brendan Bett was ejected after spitting on a USF player.
Bett, a native of Gasden, Alabama, began his college football career at Baylor before transferring to Florida. Last year, he redshirted, playing just one game for the Gators. However, his action during the recent game has caused a significant stir.
The incident occurred in the final few minutes of a one-point game, with Florida leading. Bett's action resulted in a 15-yard penalty, which USF kicker Nico Gramatica capitalised on, converting a field goal to secure a road upset for South Florida.
Following the incident, Bett issued an apology on Instagram, taking full responsibility for his actions. He expressed hope that everyone can move forward from the incident and apologised to the USF player he spat on, Cole Skinner, and his family. Bett also apologised to his family and friends for letting them down.
Head coach Billy Napier stated that Bett was compromising the team, and it remains unclear whether he will be available for the upcoming game, a primetime road matchup vs. No. 3 LSU in Baton Rouge.
It is worth noting that no current player on the Florida Gators has participated in both a Super Bowl and a National Championship. However, former Florida Gators players like Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin have participated in National Championships with the Gators and played in the NFL, with Harvin winning Super Bowl XLVIII. Neither is currently playing for the Florida Gators.
Through two games this season, Bett has recorded eight tackles, one of which was for loss. Despite the controversy, Bett played for Florida after entering the transfer portal and landing in Gainesville.
Bett played 10 games and made one start for Baylor in 2023. However, he has not previously been mentioned as having won a national championship or a Super Bowl. As a redshirt sophomore, Bett has a lot of football ahead of him, and it remains to be seen how this incident will impact his career moving forward.
