South Carolina Democrats strive to maintain their title as the initial primary state in 2028 elections
The race for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination is gathering momentum, and the debate over the order of the primary states is heating up.
In a bid to secure the coveted first-in-the-nation spotlight, South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison has put forward a proposal for his state to take the lead in the 2028 election. Harrison argues that South Carolina, with its diverse range of Democratic voters, is a proven testing ground.
This ambition comes after Biden's victory in the 2024 election, where South Carolina's primary was moved to the fore, while Iowa was booted from the top of the Democratic primary calendar. Notably, in 2024, Biden won the New Hampshire primary as a write-in candidate, despite refusing to put his name on the ballot in the non-party-sanctioned primary.
South Carolina Democrats are adamant about being first in line on the primary calendar. They are not alone in their pursuit, as Democratic senators, governors, and former Biden administration officials are already visiting early primary states, including South Carolina, for events with voters.
However, any changes to the primary calendar will be initiated by the DNC's Rules and Bylaws Committee. The DNC Chair, Ken Martin, has stated that the rank-and-file members will decide whether to change the primary schedule for the 2028 election. Martin also emphasised that if the calendar were to change, it should be open and transparent, rigorous, efficient, and fair.
Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart has signaled a willingness to fight for Iowa's position on the primary calendar for the 2028 election. As of now, there are no available search results addressing the DNC's decision regarding the order of the first primaries of the Democratic Party in 2028, and no states have officially stepped forward with a bid to take over South Carolina's first-in-the-nation status.
Meanwhile, Sen. Ruben Gallego of Arizona has plans to visit Iowa next month, and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg attended a town hall in Iowa. These visits could indicate a potential shift in the race for the 2028 Democratic primary, as a growing number of potential candidates in both parties are emerging.
The order of the Democratic primary states for the 2024 election remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the competition for the first primary is heating up, and the DNC is committed to running a fair, transparent, and rigorous process for the 2028 primary calendar.
