Space explorer executes the influential 'Star Wars' violin melody by John Williams, marking the maiden violin solo in the history of spaceflight
In a groundbreaking event, astronaut Sarah Gillis and mission commander Jared Isaacman embarked on a 106-minute spacewalk during the Polaris Dawn mission. The mission, which reached 875 miles above Earth, surpassed any crewed mission in orbit since Gemini 11 in 1966.
But the Polaris Dawn mission was not just about breaking records. It was also a musical journey. Gillis performed a violin solo of John Williams' iconic 'Rey's Theme' from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This was the first violin solo in outer space.
The choice of 'Rey's Theme' was not arbitrary. The song's themes of hope, aspiration, and optimism align perfectly with the mission's goals and the character of Rey. Gillis believes that the song symbolizes unity and hope, highlighting the resilience and potential of children everywhere.
Gillis was the only live audience for her performance. However, her music was not isolated. The performance was synchronized with musicians in Los Angeles, Haiti, Sweden, and Venezuela. The collaboration aimed to inspire young minds and raise funds for both St Jude Children's Research Hospital and El Sistema USA.
Gillis chose to support El Sistema USA because they believe every child deserves access to music education, regardless of circumstance. The synchronised performance was transmitted to Earth through the Starlink satellite, bringing the music to millions around the world.
Prior to the Polaris Dawn mission, Gillis had already made history by performing her first space violin solo during the SpaceX Inspiration4 mission in October 2021. Her classical training on the violin, she states, played a significant role in shaping her into an engineer and astronaut.
The Polaris Dawn mission was more than a gimmick; it was an astonishing feat of musicality that brought together many young musicians and music lovers around the world. The video of Gillis' performance, titled 'HARMONY OF RESILIENCE (Violin cover) by Sarah Gillis | Rey's Theme by John Williams | Polaris Dawn', was introduced by Gillis herself and released on 13 September. The duo also tested out SpaceX's new EVA suits, which could enable future missions both in Earth's orbit and further into space, potentially on the moon or Mars.
