The cosmic question mark, a tiny mark near the bottom of the picture captured by the telescope, is approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth and was observed in 2023. At first, astronomers were focusing on capturing images of two actively forming stars in the Vela Constellation. However, the advancements in the JWST's capabilities allowed for the observation of this unique phenomenon.

Professor Haojing Yan, an astronomer at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) College of Arts and Sciences, is among those involved in the discovery and study of this cosmic enigma. The cosmic question mark, it seems, does not provide answers to existing questions about space but rather raises more questions.

Initially, the cosmic question mark was not visible even to the Hubble Space Telescope. But the JWST's superior resolution and sensitivity have made it possible to see this formation more clearly. The galaxies within MACS-J0417.5-1154 are bound together by their own gravity, forming a galaxy cluster. The cosmic question mark, it appears, is a pair of galaxies within this cluster. The discovery of this cosmic question mark has garnered significant attention among astronomers, adding to the collection of clear images of star births captured by the JWST.

However, it is essential to note that the cosmic question mark does not encapsulate the nature of space exploration, as suggested earlier. The discovery does not cement its scientific value solely based on its poetic symbolism. Rather, the scientific value lies in the unique phenomenon observed within the galaxy cluster.
