Split in two groups of AfD members within Chemnitz City Council
In the city of Chemnitz, the local political landscape has undergone a significant change. The AfD City Council Faction, previously recognised by the city leadership, found itself in a state of division, leading to its temporary dissolution.
Initially, the city leadership did not acknowledge the existence of a new faction, the AfD City Council Faction - Chemnitz, which was founded by 12 members on August 1st. However, this decision was later overturned by the Chemnitz Administrative Court, paving the way for the new faction's recognition.
The split within the AfD city council faction resulted in a reduction in the number of members from 15 to two separate factions. The new chairwoman of the larger AfD faction is Dr. Volker Dringenberg, while the smaller faction, as of the available sources, does not have a specific new chairperson named.
The internal disputes within the AfD have caused a deadlock in the appointment of committees and boards, leading to a delay in the city's administrative processes. Mayor Sven Schulze (SPD) expressed his concern, stating that the city has lost significant time due to these internal disputes.
To address this situation, an extraordinary meeting of the city council has been scheduled for September 15th, where the appointment of new committees, boards, and supervisory boards will be discussed. The city has decided not to appeal the decision of the Chemnitz Administrative Court regarding the AfD city council faction situation.
This development in Chemnitz's political landscape promises to bring about changes in the city's governance and administrative processes. The city council and the city leadership will need to navigate these changes carefully to ensure a smooth transition and effective governance.
