Spotlighting Black Innovation: Jetta Bates Vasilatos Reveals Insights into Gullah Geechee Heritage

During Black History Month, a series showcasing the ideas, perspectives, and successes of Black advertising professionals was conducted in partnership with Derek Walker. One of the professionals featured in this series was Jetta Bates Vasilatos, a strategist who has worked with numerous notable brands such as L'Oréal and Unilever.

However, Vasilatos' work with these brands is not related to the promotion of a particular film. That film, The Will to Survive-The Story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, was the focus of her career earlier on and was part of Walmart's Voices of Color Film Series.

The Gullah/Geechee Nation is a subject of interest for many, as it is the location of a unique cultural group. The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of West Africans who were brought to America's southeastern coast centuries ago as slaves. They have managed to preserve their language, traditions, and way of life, and this documentary tells their story.

The film was shown during Black History Month as part of the series featuring interviews with Black advertising professionals, giving Vasilatos the opportunity to promote it. The Gullah Geechee Nation is located along the coastal regions of the southeastern United States, primarily in South Carolina, Georgia, and northeastern Florida.

The Will to Survive-The Story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation is associated with Walmart's Voices of Color Film Series, a programme that aims to amplify diverse voices and stories. This documentary is just one example of the important work being done to preserve and share the history and culture of the Gullah Geechee people.

Vasilatos' promotion of The Will to Survive-The Story of the Gullah/Geechee Nation is a testament to her dedication to promoting diverse stories and voices, even outside her work with major brands. Her involvement in this project demonstrates the potential for advertising professionals to make a positive impact beyond their usual roles.
