Spurs chairman Levy relinquishes position following nearly a quarter-century of service
Tottenham Hotspur's Executive Chairman Daniel Levy Steps Down After Nearly 25 Years
In a shocking announcement, Daniel Levy, the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League, has stepped down from his role at Tottenham Hotspur after nearly 25 years. Levy's departure marks a new era of leadership for the club.
Levy took over as chairman from Alan Sugar in February 2001 and served the club for almost two decades and a half. During his tenure, he is known for his tough negotiating style and was instrumental in transforming the club.
Despite fan criticism, Levy was responsible for the construction of a new stadium and a state-of-the-art training ground for the club. His leadership also led to two trophy wins for Tottenham Hotspur, the League Cup and last season's Europa League, their first trophy since 2008.
However, the club's performance last season resulted in a 17th place finish in the Premier League, their worst finish. Following the Europa League win, Levy sacked manager Ange Postecoglou and appointed Thomas Frank as the new manager.
Peter Charrington, a director of ENIC, takes over in the newly-created role as non-executive chairman. Charrington was appointed to usher in a new era of leadership, characterized by many changes, the establishment of a stable foundation, and the development of talent.
The club's ownership or shareholder structure remains unchanged, and the focus is currently on stability and empowering its executive team, led by CEO Vinai Venkatesham.
Tottenham Hotspur is ranked ninth on the Forbes soccer rich list with an estimated value of $3.3 billion. Despite his departure, Levy expressed pride in the work he has done at the club and thanked the fans for their support.
The announcement was made by the Premier League club on their website, where Levy also stated that he is proud of what has been achieved and will continue to support the club in the future.
Fans may recall Levy's tenure being marred by criticism over his failure to pay wages that would deliver players capable of winning the English top-flight title. However, his impact on the club cannot be overlooked, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on at Tottenham Hotspur.
