Spurs officially welcome Simons from Leipzig, amidst Chelsea's interest

After seven months of speculation, Xavi Simons has officially joined Tottenham Hotspur in a reported £52m (€60m) deal. The 20-year-old midfielder, who spent one-and-a-half years at RB Leipzig, is the club's seventh summer acquisition.

Simons, who has proven his ability to score goals and provide assists from both the No 10 position and left-wing, joins the ranks of Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, and Joao Palhinha in north London.

The Dutchman's contributions to Leipzig's offense were undeniable, with his ability to create chances and score goals highlighted throughout his tenure. In 78 appearances across all competitions, Simons scored 22 goals and provided 22 assists. Since first signing for Leipzig on loan, no Leipzig player has created more chances in all competitions than Simons (174).

Simons' transfer to Tottenham signals a change in the club's attacking midfield options, with the potential departure of Alejandro Garnacho looming. The arrival of Simons at Spurs ends the club's search for an attacking midfielder, as deals for Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze could not be finalized.

Tottenham's head coach expressed his satisfaction with the addition of Simons to the squad, calling him a "great addition." Thomas Frank believes Simons will fit in well with the existing squad, as they are already working hard together.

Simons himself expressed his excitement about the move, stating, "I'm really happy and can't wait to get going. I've been dreaming of this for a long time." He went on to say that he intends to bring flair, hard work, and discipline to the team, and to do everything he can to win, for the team and also for the fans.

Simons was of interest to Chelsea earlier in the transfer window but chose to join Tottenham after meeting with the club's head coach and feeling it was the right place for him. Bayern Munich's coach Vincent Kompany personally advocated for his signing, but Simons ultimately decided to join Spurs.

The move to Tottenham marks the end of Simons' time at RB Leipzig, where he spent one-and-a-half years on loan from Paris Saint-Germain before completing a permanent switch to the Bundesliga giants in January. Simons' great eye for his team-mates in terms of unlocking defenses is sure to be a valuable asset to the Spurs squad as they look to challenge for honours in the upcoming season.
