Squirrel shockingly endures electrocution, leaving nearby Eastwood residents in disgust and causing a power outage
In the heart of Syracuse, New York, an unusual story unfolded on Paul Avenue. A squirrel, affectionately named "Freddie" by local resident Kathy Denman after the 1972 Curtis Mayfield song "Freddie's Dead", found itself perched on a utility wire for 14 days.
The saga began when the squirrel was spotted by Chet Seidel, a neighbour, who started documenting the event daily on Twitter with his signature sardonic commentary. On Day 1, Seidel mused that the squirrel might be sleeping, while on Day 2, he noted a peculiar gathering of flying insects around the rodent.
As the days passed, the condition of Freddie deteriorated. By Day 8, signs of insect activity and scavenging were evident. The pouring rain on Day 3 seemed to enhance the sadness of the situation. Despite the concern for Freddie's welfare, National Grid, the local utility company, initially took a hands-off approach, responding only to squirrel incidents that caused power outages.
However, following an inquiry from the platform, National Grid dispatched a crew to remove Freddie on Day 14, around 10:15 p.m. The company's decision was driven by the potential hazards the squirrel could conjure up, such as neighbours attempting to dislodge it using dangerous methods.
In an attempt to resolve the situation earlier, Denman had contacted the city and county for help, but neither was willing to approach an electric wire. Unfortunately, no further information about the removal of the dead squirrel from Paul Avenue is available as of June 22, 2019.

As the tale of Freddie the Squirrel comes to an end, we are left to ponder the resilience of life and the unexpected connections that can form within a community. Freddie may have been just a squirrel, but to many on Paul Avenue, he was a symbol of the shared experience of watching life unfold, one day at a time.
