St. Lucian Deputy Prime Minister along with Ministers embark on a visit to Taiwan
Saint Lucian Delegation Visits Taiwan to Boost Bilateral Exchanges
Saint Lucian Deputy Prime Minister Ernest Hilaire and his delegation are currently in Taiwan, marking a significant visit aimed at enhancing bilateral exchanges between the two nations.
Upon arrival at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, Hilaire was warmly welcomed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Chen Ming-chi. The visit, which includes a tour of Kaohsiung's world-renowned yacht industry, is a significant part of the Saint Lucian delegation's itinerary.
Hilaire, who last visited Taiwan in 2023, serves as the Minister for Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture, and Information in Saint Lucia. Accompanying him on the trip are Minister for Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs Emma Hippolyte, and Joachim Andre Henry, Minister for Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment.
The visit to Taiwan is a continuation of the efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries. It follows the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Saint Lucia and Taiwan in 2007, a significant event in international relations. This decision, however, led to the PRC severing its ties with Saint Lucia.
Saint Lucia is one of 12 states worldwide that recognize the Republic of China instead of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Diplomatic relations between Saint Lucia and Taiwan were first established in 1984, but were broken in 1997. The re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 2007 resulted in the PRC severing its ties with Saint Lucia.
During their stay, the Saint Lucian delegation is scheduled to meet with President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan. They will also attend a banquet hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung for the Caribbean ally delegation. The delegation plans to make a trip to the Ministry of Culture and visit local cultural tourism sites during their visit.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a news statement regarding the visit, highlighting the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations. The yacht industry in Kaohsiung, a notable attraction for international visitors, is expected to be a highlight of the delegation's tour.
This visit is intended to further boost bilateral exchanges between Saint Lucia and Taiwan, paving the way for a stronger and more prosperous relationship between the two countries.
