Stage 2 Victory for Lorena Wiebes in Simac Ladies Tour, extending her overall lead
Lorena Wiebes Claims Victory in the Second Stage of Simac Ladies Tour
Lorena Wiebes (Team SD Worx-Protime) has secured a thrilling victory in the second stage of the Simac Ladies Tour, extending her lead in the overall standings. The 125.4-kilometer race, consisting of four laps, was marked by a fierce battle and several splits due to crosswinds.
Wiebes, along with a select group, broke away with 57 kilometers remaining in the race. The lead group, which included three of her teammates, Elisa Balsamo, and two of Lidl-Trek's riders, managed to stay clear of the chasing peloton, but their gap never extended beyond around 18 seconds.
As the race headed towards its final stages, the leaders' advantage pushed out over 30 seconds as the bunch split into echelons with 25 kilometers remaining. The peloton's hopes of closing down the high-powered breakaway began to evaporate, and the gap stretched out to 50 seconds with less than 20 kilometers to go.
In the final sprint, Wiebes crossed the finish line first, followed by Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek) and Megan Jastrab (Team Picnic-PostNL). Pfeiffer Georgi (Team Picnic-PostNL), who had shown a strong opening on stage 1, crashed and lost touch with the leaders.
Clara Copponi's second-place finish moved her into second place in the overall standings, behind Wiebes, heading into day three of the race. The peloton's gap dropped below ten seconds with around 30 kilometers remaining, but the chase lost momentum due to crosswinds, and the reduced bunch chasing behind could not make an impact on the lead group.
The Simac Ladies Tour continues to be a closely contested race, with teams such as SD Works Pro (Lorena Wiebes' team), Lidl-Trek (Alisa Balsamo's team), Picnic PostNL (Megan Jastrab's team), and Team Visma | Lease a Bike among others, vying for positions. Wiebes looks to be in control of the overall classification with four stages left to race.
