Stashed Aproximately 200 Kilograms of Illicit Fireworks
In a court hearing at the Berlin-Tiergarten Local Court, a 35-year-old family man was sentenced for violating the Explosives Act and the Weapons Act. The verdict, delivered on a specific date, stated that the permit comes first, then the fireworks.
The proceedings followed a search conducted on December 18, 2024, in an apartment in Berlin-Spandau. The police action was prompted by a tip-off, leading to the discovery of approximately 200 kilograms of illegal fireworks. Among the seized pyrotechnics were 14 ball bombs, special firework bodies with high explosive power, and 800 large firework bombs. A blank-firing pistol was also found in a cash box during the search.
The defendant, a previously unconvicted truck driver and father of two, admitted to attempting to obtain a fireworks permit. However, his application was denied due to his criminal record. The defendant purchased the pyrotechnics for around 500 euros in the Czech Republic.
Several serious incidents involving ball bombs occurred during the 2024/25 New Year's Eve celebrations in Berlin. The presiding judge stated that a cigarette could have been enough to cause an explosion with the quantities of fireworks found. This led to a demand for a seven-month suspended sentence from the prosecutor.
The defense lawyer pleaded for a lenient sentence but did not make a specific request. The defendant, showing remorse for his actions, stated that he had learned from his mistake. Despite this, the court sentenced him to six months imprisonment, suspended.
