Strategies Based on Clausewitz's Principles for Ukrainian Military Defense
In the heart of Europe, a nation is standing strong against the odds. Ukraine, a country that has been persistently threatened, is transforming its role in warfare, with its people becoming the chief defenders. This shift echoes the principles outlined by Carl von Clausewitz, the renowned Prussian military theorist, who saw the people as a wellspring of moral strength for defense.
The Ukrainian people, much like the Landwehr, a Prussian reform in response to a catastrophic defeat in 1806, are enabling citizens to defend their homes. The Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine are akin to this historical system, providing a formal structure for local resistance.
Clausewitz also emphasised the strategic importance of fortresses, which provide indirect protection to a country by holding together the strategic web and exerting influence over the adjacent territory, even beyond the range of their guns. While modern military bases or urban centres have functionally replaced fortresses, Ukraine's extensive 50 km fortified defense line, built over eleven years, covering key cities and logistic hubs, has proven instrumental in their defense.
Ukraine's informational strength has been exceptional. The people have generated moral support, international solidarity, and condemnation of Russia, creating an atmospheric resistance that has disheartened the adversary. This strength is not limited to the physical domain; Ukrainians have developed apps for local observation and reporting during the war.
The United Nations, recognising the gravity of the situation, voted on a resolution to condemn the Russian invasion, demonstrating demonstrative support for the defender. The international community's concern for the potential loss of Ukraine reverberates to the global community's "interwoven" connections, resulting in defensive allies emerging to support Ukraine.
The defense, as opposed to the attack, chooses when to strike but not exactly where. The defender already exists somewhere, deriving much of its strength from this fact. Ukraine has successfully marshaled the means to conduct its defense, leveraging fortified positions, Western-supplied modern weapons, intelligence operations, and counterattacks.
Technology has scaled, accelerated, amplified, and distributed the latent distributed surveillance network identified by Clausewitz. This new power has been harnessed by the Ukrainian people, transforming their resistance into a formidable force.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may be unsatisfied with the extent of international support. However, Ukraine's defense has been effective against a relatively weaker and overstretched Russian offensive, with the Russians suffering heavy losses, having limited initial objectives achieved, and facing logistical and strategic difficulties.
In the face of adversity, the Ukrainian people have shown resilience and determination. Their spirit is a testament to the power of the people in warfare, a power that Clausewitz recognised over two centuries ago. As the conflict continues, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution and the triumph of the Ukrainian spirit.
