Canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati Announced
In a historic event, Pope Leo XIV has announced that the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati will take place on September 7, 2025, in St. Peter’s Square.
Blessed Carlo Acutis, born in London in 1991 and raised in Milan, Italy, displayed an early attraction to the spiritual life. He was known for his enthusiasm for typical teenage interests, such as video games, pets, soccer, and music. However, his devotion to his faith was unparalleled. He recited the rosary and attended Mass daily, served as a catechist, volunteered at a church soup kitchen, and tutored children with their homework. In 2018, Pope Francis declared him "Venerable," and he was beatified in 2020.
Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, on the other hand, was a lay Dominican who participated in demonstrations to defend the Catholic faith against the Communist and Fascist parties in Italy. He began receiving daily Communion at a young age and served the poor through the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Known for his passion for outdoor activities such as mountaineering, he has been designated as a patron of athletes. Frassati died at the age of 24 in 1925, potentially from polio contracted during his service to the sick.
The canonization Mass for Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati begins at 10 a.m. in Rome (4 a.m. EDT). For those in North America, the livestream times are: 3:45 a.m. EDT, 2:45 a.m. CDT, 1:45 a.m. MDT, 12:45 a.m. PDT, 11:45 p.m. Sept. 6 (AKDT), and 9:45 p.m. Sept. 6 (HDT). The Vatican News livestream of the canonization will be accessible at our website, starting at approximately 9:45 a.m. in Rome.
EWTN will broadcast the liturgy and canonizations, with an encore at 6 p.m. EDT on Sept. 7. You can also follow our website's partner Catholic News Service Rome on Facebook and [X], along with CNS Rome senior correspondent Carol Glatz on [X], for live updates on the canonizations.
Pier Giorgio Frassati evangelized his friends, and Carlo Acutis offered his sufferings for Pope Benedict XVI when he died of leukemia in 2006 at age 15. Both are now set to be proclaimed saints of the Catholic Church by Pope Leo XIV, who will attend the ceremony and declare them as models of holiness especially for children, youth, and young adults.
This event is a significant milestone in the lives of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, and their stories serve as a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of service to others.
