Street Thieves Steal Wallets; Phantom Bikers Removed from the Highway: Were Bystanders Ever in Peril?
In the past week, South-East Hesse has seen a series of incidents that have prompted various investigations by the local authorities.
On Tuesday morning, a 41-year-old man was injured while driving on the A45 highway between Langenselbold and Hanau interchange. According to reports, the motorcyclist had to swerve to avoid a tractor-trailer, resulting in a fall and injuries to his back area. He was taken to the hospital with minor rib injuries. Witnesses with information about the incident are asked to call the South-East Hesse Highway Police at 06181 9010-0.
In a separate incident, a hit-and-run occurred in Spielberg on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a motorcyclist hospitalized. The driver responsible for the incident failed to fulfill their obligations and is yet to be identified. Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call 069 8098-5699.
Another hit-and-run occurred Tuesday morning on the L3195 road between Rabenstein and Ulmbach. A 30-year-old man driving a Hyundai i20 towards Ulmbach had to swerve to avoid a yellow vehicle that encroached on his lane. His e-bike was stolen in the process, and it was later seized by the authorities.
In addition, a man was found in the three-lane area between the Langenselbold highway junction and the Langenselbold exit and removed from the road. The man from Birstein lost control of his car and ended up in the opposite ditch, causing approximately €2,500 in damages. He was taken to the police station for further investigation on suspicion of receiving stolen goods.
Meanwhile, two unknown suspects stole a 79-year-old woman's purse in Erlensee/Langendiebach on Saturday. Witnesses to the incident are asked to call 06181 100-123.
Furthermore, a wheel loader was stolen from an extension road of the industrial street towards the Waechtersbach wastewater treatment plant. The wheel loader, valued at around 10,000 euros, was last seen in the area on May 26, 2025. Witnesses with information about the theft are asked to call the Criminal Police at 06181 100-123.
Witnesses who may have been endangered by a "ghost cyclist" on the A45 highway towards Giessen on Wednesday morning are asked to call 06181 9010-0. The man, riding a bicycle on the highway, caused concern among road users when he had to swerve to avoid an object on the road, reportedly a tarp, and hit his head on the side window.
The Police Directorate Southeast Hesse has recently focused on targeted controls to combat residential burglaries and trick thefts, conducted traffic speed monitoring at various high-risk locations, responded to incidents involving dangerous driving and altercations, and welcomed 49 new police officers and 13 staff members to serve the area comprising nearly one million inhabitants, including Offenbach and the Main-Kinzig district.
The extent of property damage in some of these incidents is yet to be determined, but the authorities urge anyone with information about any of these incidents or the suspects to contact the respective police stations.
