In a season filled with high expectations for the New York Mets, one of the most surprising developments has been the struggles of relief pitcher Ryan Helsley. The Mets acquired Helsley at the deadline last year, trading three minor league players – Jesus Baez, Nate Dohm, and Frank Elissalt – for the two-time All-Star reliever.

However, Helsley's performance for the Mets has been less than stellar. With an 0-3 record, a staggering 10.38 ERA, and 14 runs allowed in just 8 2/3 innings, Helsley has blown 4 saves in his 11 appearances for the team. This poor performance has been met with boos from the home crowd at Citi Field, and has added to a season of frustration for the Mets.

The current difficulties for Helsley come after a standout 2024 season where he led the league with 49 saves and was awarded the NL Reliever of the Year. Helsley's fastball still hits triple digits, suggesting potential for a resurgence.

The Mets' problems with Helsley's performance began early in the season. In a game against the Phillies, Helsley walked Nick Castellanos and gave up a home run to Harrison Bader, tying the game. The home run by Bader, hit against the Mets at Citi Field, has been a defining moment in Helsley's struggles with the team.

Despite these challenges, there is hope that Helsley can bounce back and get back on course. Edwin Díaz, a fellow relief pitcher for the Mets, has publicly supported Helsley, expressing confidence in his ability to turn things around.

However, it's worth noting that the Mets' acquisition of Helsley was not intended as a reclamation project. Prior to joining the Mets, Helsley was sidelined for two months due to a forearm injury in 2023. The Cardinals, who trained Helsley before his acquisition by the Mets, appear to have made a wise decision in moving him.

As the Mets continue to navigate the ups and downs of the 2025 season, the team will be looking for Helsley to find his form and contribute to the team's success. Only time will tell if the potential for a resurgence will become a reality for the struggling reliever.
