Study Reveals Significant Worry Regarding Inadequate Advancement Chances for Children
In a recent survey, concerns among German parents with school-age children about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic have reached an all-time high, with 86 percent expressing very great or great concern. This is a 14 percentage point increase compared to May 2020.
The survey also revealed that slightly less than half (44 percent) of the population are currently concerned about insufficient social contacts. This concern, however, pales in comparison to the worry about the spread of new coronavirus variants, with more than half (56 percent) of Germans expressing their concerns.
The economic development of Germany is a significant concern for seven out of ten (73 percent) of the population. This is echoed in the criticism of the government's handling of the pandemic, with 56 percent expressing dissatisfaction, marking the highest level of criticism in the past 11 months.
Interestingly, 42 percent of Germans are satisfied with the corona crisis management of the federal government and the federal states, a decrease of 4 points compared to mid-January.
The survey also touched upon societal issues, with a clear majority (71 percent) of the population supporting the introduction of taxes on high wealth.
On a positive note, only about 44 percent of Germans are concerned that they or their relatives could be infected with the coronavirus.
Looking forward, the EU Commission has proposed new funding mechanisms to cover coronavirus-related costs as part of the NextGenerationEU recovery plan presented on July 16, 2025. These mechanisms include new own resources from emissions trading, a CO2 border adjustment mechanism, and electronic waste levies.
The survey provides a snapshot of the current state of public opinion in Germany regarding the coronavirus pandemic and related issues. As the situation continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how these concerns and support for policies might change in the coming months.
