Subaru's WRX Sportwagon to Introduce Powerful Hybrid: The latest fuel-efficient technology, already integrated into the Forester, will be incorporated into the performance-oriented passenger car model.
The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as Subaru prepares to unveil its electrified line-up, with the highly anticipated 2026 WRX Sportswagon taking centre stage.
For the first time, the WRX Sportswagon will be powered by Subaru's Strong Hybrid powertrain technology, positioning it between the 130kW 1.8-litre and the 202kW 2.4-litre turbo engines. This move is part of Subaru's transition to a full line-up of electrified models.
The Strong Hybrid in the WRX Sportwagon is expected to produce 146kW of power, similar to the output of the Subaru Forester SUV, which recently debuted with Subaru's 2.5-litre Strong Hybrid technology.
All versions of the WRX Sportwagon will feature Subaru's continuously variable transmission (CVT) and symmetrical all-wheel drive, ensuring a smooth and reliable driving experience.
The Subaru Levorg, known as the 2026 WRX Sportswagon in other markets, will initially offer both its current 1.8-litre and 2.4-litre turbocharged engines. However, the most powerful 2.4T engine will be available at a later date.
The Subaru Levorg, which is currently available in Australia starting at $52,290 plus on-road costs, will also be offered with Subaru's most efficient 2.5-litre Strong Hybrid, as it has recently debuted in the Subaru Forester SUV.
Subaru's electrification efforts have so far been focused mainly on Japan, and the full electric Levorg is expected to be launched initially in its domestic market. There is no specific indication that it will be launched as a fully electric model in other regions before Japan.
Meanwhile, some European markets are expected to switch to an entirely all-hybrid line-up for the Subaru Levorg due to the electrified 2.5-litre's low CO2 emissions.
Subaru has also announced exciting electric vehicle models named Uncharted and Trailseeker, looking good for Australia. Along with an updated Solterra, these models are expected to go on-sale in Australia.
However, Subaru Australia has yet to comment on the new hybrid WRX Sportswagon. It's thought the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) could force its introduction in Australia.
In related news, the modified Subaru Levorg, known in Japan, is most likely to be offered as a fully electric vehicle first in the Japanese market. There is no specific indication that it will be launched as a fully electric model in other regions before Japan.
As Subaru continues to push the boundaries of electrification, auto enthusiasts eagerly await the release of the 2026 WRX Sportswagon next year. Stay tuned for more updates on Subaru's electrified line-up.
