After 16 years of dedicated service, Mayor Bernd Tischler of Bottrop is set to retire at the end of October 2025. On August 29, 2025, a farewell event was held in his honour, attended by around 300 guests, including several mayors from neighbouring cities, federal and state politicians, and the NRW Minister of Education, Dorothee Feller.

The ceremony began with a musical performance by the Ruhr Coal Choir and students from Bottrop's Music School, setting a heartwarming tone for the event. The musical climax included songs sung by children and teenagers, which brought a sense of nostalgia and hope for the city's future.

Mayor Thomas Kufen of Essen praised Tischler's approachable nature and his reputation as a caring mayor. Dorothee Feller, the NRW Minister of Education, commended Tischler's "untiring futuristic mindset" and his successes in multiple elections. Federal MP Nicklas Kappe and State MP Thomas Goeddertz were also present to pay their respects.

According to answers received, Tischler's reliability, trustworthiness, good relations with neighbouring cities, and future orientation are key aspects of his success. His term as Mayor was characterized by his excellent listening skills and conciliatory personality.

Tischler is proud of transforming Bottrop into a model city for energy efficiency and climate protection. Since 2009, the number of socially insured employees in Bottrop has increased by 8,000. Moreover, the proportion of women in leadership positions in the city has increased from 18.5% in 2009 to 45%.

Bernd Tischler's career in Bottrop's city administration began in 1989 as head of the environmental planning department. His service spans a total of 36 years with the city. At the event, Tischler thanked the people of Bottrop for their support and felt it a great privilege to represent them.

The ceremony ended with a standing ovation for 16 years of service and the Ruhr Coal Chorus singing "You'll Never Walk Alone". Despite the bittersweet farewell, the people of Bottrop look forward to the future with optimism, knowing that they have had a dedicated and visionary leader in Bernd Tischler.
