In the heart of Bottrop, a significant development has taken place at Boy station. The newly constructed parking lot, funded primarily by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, has been officially opened to the public on Monday, September 8, 2025.
The parking lot, which now offers 37 P&R spaces, has been a long-awaited addition to the station. Before its construction, a gravelled area was used haphazardly for vehicle parking. The planning costs for the parking lot were 250,000 euros, but the construction costs amounted to 764,000 euros, with the state covering 94 percent of the expenses.
The funding for the project did not come from the city of Bottrop. Instead, the area, which originally housed a closed gas station, belongs to a private owner who has leased it to the city in perpetuity. The city will maintain and operate the parking lot, ensuring its smooth running and upkeep.
The Boy station parking lot project also included the reorganization of the area around the station, aiming to improve the surroundings in the city quarter. Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) have invested approximately 1,014,100 euros in the project, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the comfort of train travelers.
Technical Deputy Mayor Klaus Müller stated that the completion of the parking lot improves the connection of Bottrop South to the rail network, making travel more convenient for locals and visitors alike. DB and VRR have handed over the completed parking lot to the city of Bottrop.
One challenge during the construction was the drainage of the area, as the water is held in a retention canal before being slowly released into the municipal drainage network. Despite this, the project was successfully completed, and the parking lot now offers an additional 23 bike parking spaces, 13 of which are covered, ensuring the convenience of cyclists as well.
Notably, the use of the Boy station parking lot will be free of charge, making it an accessible option for all. This development is set to revitalize the Boy station area and improve the overall transport infrastructure in Bottrop.
