Zverev's US Open Dream Ends in Third Round

Alexander Zverev's bid for a Grand Slam title at the US Open has come to an end, as he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime in a gruelling four-set match. The German star, currently ranked as the world number three, lost 6:4, 6:7 (7:9), 4:6, 4:6 in a match that lasted 3 hours and 48 minutes.

The defeat came as a surprise, as Zverev had reached the quarterfinals in his last four appearances at the US Open. However, this year he exited earlier than in 2018.

Zverev attributed his loss to poor play, stating, "I lost because I played badly." He described his performance as passive, citing a lack of feel with his forehand and backhand. The statistics supported this claim, with Auger-Aliassime recording 50 direct winning shots compared to Zverev's 29.

Zverev's frustration was evident throughout the match, as he furiously threw his racket to the ground after making minor mistakes. He questioned the cause of his performance, saying, "I wonder what's behind my performance."

The match took a crucial turn in the second set, when a net cord bounced over Zverev's racket, benefiting Auger-Aliassime and leveling the set. Zverev lost the second set due to a set point failure in the tiebreak.

Despite the loss, Zverev remains optimistic about his future. He has withdrawn from the Davis Cup with the German selection on September 12 and 13 in Tokyo against Japan, but his next tournament is the Laver Cup from September 19 to 21.

Zverev's future collaboration with Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's uncle and successful coach, remains uncertain. His current coaching team primarily consists of his father Alexander Sr. and his brother Mischa, with no confirmed new head coach. He remains open to input from external advisors like Boris Becker, though no official change has been made.

Zverev has not won a Grand Slam title, with his last significant appearance being in the final of the US Open five years ago. His performance this season at Grand Slams has been disappointing, with his only significant highlight being a final appearance at the Australian Open.

Despite the setbacks, Zverev continues to seek ongoing professional support for his mental health and performance. He will look to bounce back at the Laver Cup and continue his pursuit of a Grand Slam title.
