In the heart of Vietnam, Huong Yen province has become a beacon for agri-tourism, earning the nickname of the 'Longan Capital' of the country. This designation is well-deserved, as the province is renowned for its unique longan varieties and their distinctive flavours.

The surge in demand for the 'zero-dong tour' initiative, spearheaded by the Quyet Thang Cooperative, has been remarkable. This innovative approach invites visitors to explore orchards for free, allowing them to sample fruit on site and purchase longans directly from the growers. This experience has become an annual ritual for many, such as Ha Noi resident Nguyen Thanh Do.

Tran Van My, the director of the fruit cooperative, drew inspiration for the 'zero-dong tour' from soil-tourism models in southern provinces. The aim is to build quality, diverse, and distinctive agricultural and rural tourism products that offer high experiences and added value in Huong Yen.

Farmers in Huong Yen are embracing this change, transforming their longan orchards into tourist attractions. The Nễ Châu Longan Cooperative is even venturing into export markets, recently beginning to ship longans to Europe.

The Huong Yen Tourism Promotion Centre is actively proposing the development of more structured agri-tourism products tied to rural life and local crafts. They also encourage orchard owners to adopt organic methods, maintain clean and attractive landscapes, and adhere to food safety practices.

Digital tools, such as videos showcasing harvesting or clean cultivation methods, are helping to link growers with buyers beyond the province. Promotion of the 'zero-dong tour' heavily relies on social media, with many visitors sharing their experiences, further fuelling interest.

Industry experts stress that quality remains key in the longan industry. Good products drive good tourism, according to Director of the Toàn Cầu Food Import-Export JSC Nguyễn Đức Hùng.

Longan grower Bui Thi Thu Huong, who has become an informal tour guide after hosting a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2022, echoes this sentiment. Orchards in Huong Yen are open daily from 8am to 6pm throughout the harvest season, with weekends particularly busy.

The Tourism Promotion Centre is also focusing on training, promotion, and tour connections with other destinations in the province. As the 'zero-dong tour' continues to gain popularity, it seems that Huong Yen's unique longans and welcoming orchards will continue to attract visitors for years to come.
