Summer brings back the acclaimed Tramping Safety Video series.

In an effort to enhance the safety of hikers navigating Aotearoa's most spectacular trails, the Mountain Safety Council (MSC) has released seven new walk-through style videos. These videos bring the total number of safety videos produced by MSC to 19.

These videos, primarily safety-focused, prepare participants for popular tracks by highlighting common risks and hazards, key decision-making points, and offering guidance. The new videos cover a range of trails including the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail Pinnacles Walk in the Coromandel, the Tararua Southern Crossing in Wellington/Wairarapa, and the Alpine Route and Red Hills in Tasman/Marlborough, among others.

The videos were shot in backcountry locations across Aotearoa, with MSC carrying tens of kilograms of filming equipment including drones, video cameras, batteries, and memory cards during the filming process. In total, 22 days of on-location filming were spent, walking over 250km, and passing by 18 backcountry huts.

The new videos were developed in collaboration with partners such as the Department of Conservation (DOC), NZ Police, local LandSAR Search and Rescue volunteers, MetService, NZ Outdoor Instructors Association, and other local track groups and organizations.

The release of these videos follows the success of the first 12 videos, which won the 'Insights Communication' award at the 2021 Research Associations Effectiveness Awards. The research on the impact of the first 12 videos showed that watchers were safer, with improved awareness of hazards, key decisions, and safety-related behavior changes.

According to the findings, 76% of people who watched the video said they would make changes to their plans because of it, and 90% of those people did. Furthermore, 95% of viewers learned something new, with 82% saying their knowledge of hazards along the track had improved, and 85% said their overall understanding of the track had increased.

The videos are available on the Plan My Walk app, MSC's YouTube Channel, and will soon be available on the DOC and MetService websites. By watching these informative videos, hikers can better prepare themselves for a safe and enjoyable journey through Aotearoa's stunning backcountry.
