Summer Global Leadership Program initiated by MIT and SUTD experiences an surge in popularity

In the heart of summer 2016, a unique collaboration between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) brings together 34 students for a 10-week program. This partnership, now in its third year, aims to foster creative, innovative, and analytical engineering, while also nurturing global leadership skills.

The program, known as the SUTD Global Leadership Program (SUTD GLP), offers a diverse range of courses. These include Technical Writing, Ceramics, Wilderness Engineering, Education Innovation, Architectural Drawing, and a new offering this year - Electric Water Vehicle Design Challenge.

One of the MIT participants, Maryam Archie, a rising sophomore, finds the SUTD GLP program particularly appealing due to its focus on fostering creative, innovative, and analytical engineering. Maryam is most excited about working on the electric water vehicle, where she will focus on electrical design.

Another participant, Daisy Tang, sees the program as an opportunity to develop as a global leader, with a focus on cross-cultural awareness and competence. Daisy looks forward to accessing the resources at the International Design Center (IDC), including mills, routers, waterjets, laser-cutters, and 3-D printers.

Hazel Lau, a SUTD student, is looking forward to the ceramics class, as SUTD does not have many visual arts offerings. However, Hazel finds navigating the Cambridge traffic challenging, as cars cross during red lights.

The program kicked off with a weeklong "Leadershape" training program for personal vision development and leadership skills. The students will have opportunities to kayak and go wilderness camping in Maine, testing out skills learned in the Wilderness Engineering class.

The program will culminate with a boat race at the MIT Sailing Pavillion on August 3rd at 10 a.m., with members of the MIT community welcome to attend. The students will remain on campus during this time, making the most of their stay in Cambridge.

Interested MIT undergraduates can contact Kate Rhodes at [email protected] for more information about the GLP in summer 2016. The name of the leader of the Global Leadership Program at MIT offered in summer 2016 is not available in the provided search results.

This partnership between MIT and SUTD includes research collaboration, curricular development, teaching fellowships, MIT faculty residencies, and dual masters programs. The collaboration aims to create a new university in Asia with the "mens-et-manus" ("mind-and-hand") spirit of MIT.

The SUTD GLP program does not repeat earlier facts about the partnership between MIT and SUTD, leadership training, engineering coursework, outdoor adventure, or the current classes offered. However, it is clear that this program offers a unique opportunity for students from both universities to learn, grow, and contribute to the field of engineering, while also developing their leadership skills.
