Support grows among Cebu mayors for implementing stricter lifestyle restrictions
In a significant development, mayors and vice mayors from Cebu have shown their support for a growing local movement advocating for accountability and transparency in public service. This shift is in response to the President's directive for lifestyle checks on public officials.
Cordova Mayor Cesar "Didoy" Suan, who heads the League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Cebu Chapter, has openly expressed his support for the President's directive. Suan, who has been proactive in monitoring Department of Public Works and Highways projects in Cebu's 44 municipalities and six component cities, emphasized that no "ghost projects" have been detected in the region.
The order for lifestyle checks, which are investigations into the wealth and spending habits of public officials to determine if they are living beyond their legal income, comes amidst growing national concerns over alleged irregularities in flood-control projects. The alleged irregularities have become a matter of national concern, with mayors in the region generally supporting the initiative.
Two vice mayors, Jerome Escalona of Tabogon and Joyjoy Alegado of Consolacion, have joined the Vice Mayors for Good Governance, a group that takes inspiration from Mayors for Good Governance, led by Baguio City Mayor Benjie Magalong. This group includes Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.
The League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Cebu Chapter may formalize its backing for the President's directive if necessary, signifying a growing local push for accountability. This movement is not only focused on lifestyle checks but also extends to closely monitoring flood-control projects to protect public funds and strengthen transparency.
The support from Cebu's mayors and vice mayors signifies a commitment to promoting accountability and restoring trust in public service. This development is part of a wider national movement aimed at addressing concerns about corruption and ensuring that public funds are used effectively and efficiently.
