Suspect apprehended in Minneapolis following vehicle theft and ensuing collision resulting in the fatalities of two females.
In the early hours of this morning, a chaotic spree unfolded in north Minneapolis, resulting in a fatal crash at a busy intersection. The investigation into the carjacking and attempted carjackings is ongoing, but authorities have made an arrest in connection to the incident.
Edward Tiki Arrington, also known as Troy Mike Payton, a 34-year-old man with an extensive criminal history, is facing multiple charges. He is accused of stealing a black Volkswagen during the incident and is being held on a $4 million bail.
Two young women, Marisa Ardys Casebolt and Liberty Borb, both 25 years old, lost their lives in the crash. Marisa Ardys Casebolt, an enrolled member of the White Earth Tribe, was more than just a sister to her family. She was a loving and devoted mother, known for her warmth, joy, great sense of humor, and pride in her children and her job. Marisa's memory will live on in the laughter she shared, the love she gave, and the strength she showed every day. She was also a best friend and an amazing aunt.
A six-year-old passenger was taken to the hospital with broken femurs and a traumatic brain injury. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
Edward Tiki Arrington is charged with two counts of fleeing a peace officer resulting in death, one count of fleeing a peace officer resulting in great bodily harm, discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, and carjacking. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty stated that the loss of life was preventable and that charges were immediately issued against Arrington to protect the community.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson expressed condolences for the loss of life, stating that "Two young women should be alive today." The suspect has a prior conviction of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, for which he was sentenced to 40 months in prison in 2009. However, there is no information confirming that he was previously convicted of offenses such as driving without connection to authorities, weapons possession, or drug trafficking.
The incident started around 8 a.m., with Arrington driving recklessly and pointing a gun at multiple drivers. The spree ended in the fatal crash at the busy north Minneapolis intersection.
The investigation into the carjacking and attempted carjackings is ongoing, and authorities are investigating Arrington for receiving stolen goods. They are also looking into whether the vehicle was stolen. Edward Tiki Arrington is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday afternoon. The community mourns the loss of two young lives and hopes for justice in this tragic case.
