Two tragic incidents have occurred this year involving individuals who died whilst in police custody.

On Friday night, a 46-year-old man was found unconscious and unresponsive inside a holding cell at the Kings County Criminal Court. The identity of the man will be released by the police once his family has been notified. Emergency services responded to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing regarding this incident.

The first death in police custody this year was 32-year-old Soso Ramishvili of Brooklyn. He was detained for three days for a shoplifting arrest before his death in a holding cell. The NYPD's Force Investigation Division will investigate the incident as Mr. Ramishvili was in police custody. No cause of death has been determined for either Ardit Billa or Soso Ramishvili, and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner is yet to release their findings.

Last week, Ardit Billa, 29, was found unresponsive in his cell at Rikers Island. Three Department of Correction staffers have been suspended over the incident involving Mr. Billa, and an investigation is ongoing. The second death in police custody this year occurred at 120 Schermerhorn Street, the location of Rikers Island.

This article previously misstated the number of people who died in city custody. The correctional facility where these incidents occurred is Rikers Island. It is crucial to note that this article does not speculate on the causes of these deaths but instead presents the facts as they have been reported. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
