Suspected bomber allegedly received assistance in his escape
In a series of events that have left the public and authorities in Germany in shock, the former Ansbach school shooter, aged 34, has been arrested in Colombia following an elaborate escape from a psychiatric clinic in Erlangen.
The convicted criminal, who was sentenced to nine years in juvenile detention for attempted murder in 47 cases back in 2009, had been receiving therapy at the clinic prior to his escape. The clinic had assessed that the suspect posed no danger, but on August 16, he failed to return from a supervised outing.
The public prosecutor's office in Ansbach is now investigating the suspect's escape and potential accomplices. Oberstaatsanwalt Weitner, the chief public prosecutor in Ansbach, believes that the suspect received assistance during his escape. He assumes that the suspect received financial assistance for his escape, although no publicly available information has yet identified who provided this aid.
The suspect, who had a valid passport and luggage, traveled from an airport outside the European Union towards Colombia for his escape. The escape itself was meticulously planned, with the route well thought out and the time window of the outing deliberately exploited.
Investigators are pursuing leads on specific individuals in relation to the escape. Charges such as aiding an escape and obstruction of justice are being considered. The court also ordered the suspect's indefinite commitment to a psychiatric facility, but it appears that the escape itself is not punishable for the suspect.
It's worth noting that in 2009, the suspect, then 18, went on a shooting rampage at an Ansbach school, injuring nine students and one teacher. Thankfully, there are no initial indications that the suspect committed any crimes during his escape.
The suspect was returned to the psychiatry clinic in Erlangen on Sunday and is now under investigation.
