Detroit Tigers Poker Professional Craig Bergeron Faces Murder Charges in Detroit Shooting

Craig Bergeron, a prominent poker professional with over $1.3 million in career live tournament earnings, is currently facing first-degree murder charges for a shooting that took place in Detroit in December 2024. The exact date of his arrest is not specified, but he has been in Wayne County jail without bond since then.

Before disappearing from the poker scene a few years ago, Bergeron was described by his peers as caring and generous. However, the poker community was shocked when the news of his alleged crime broke. Bergeron allegedly shot a man dead at random in Detroit in December 2024, and he is also accused of assaulting someone else before being apprehended.

The murder case against Bergeron was initially dismissed by Judge Shawn Jacque on September 11, 2024. But on the following day, Judge Jacque reissued the indictment against Bergeron after a police officer was able to get in touch with the main witness in the case. The witness had been missing last week.

Bergeron has not entered a plea yet, and there is no scheduled trial date. First-degree murder in Michigan carries the possibility of life in prison without parole.

In the hours before the shooting of 37-year-old Tommy Ireland, Bergeron posted paranoid videos on social media. However, this fact is not directly related to the Detroit Tigers or the murder case.

The poker community is still reeling from the shock of Bergeron's alleged actions. Bergeron's most notable finish was fourth at the PokerStars European Poker Tour Deauville Main Event in 2010 for $312,853. The case is currently under investigation, and more updates are expected to follow.
