Weir Embraces Clean Energy Transition in Africa

Weir, a global engineering solutions provider, is making significant strides in its sustainability efforts across Africa. The company is focusing on reducing its reliance on carbon-intensive electricity sources and transitioning to renewable energy.

In South Africa, one of the key areas of focus, Weir's Heavy Bay Foundry (HBF) near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape is progressing towards greater reliance on renewables. The HBF is set to introduce solar and wind power from the second half of 2026, in collaboration with other industrial users in the region.

Weir's commitment to renewable energy is evident in its operations. Solar power has already been installed at its Isando facility, reducing dependence on the national grid and enhancing operational resilience during power disruptions. The company plans to transition the entire Isando facility to renewable energy by 2028. Similarly, additional solar generation capacity is being installed at Weir's Alrode manufacturing plant with the goal of eventually running the entire facility on renewable energy.

Chris Mortimer, Weir's director of Safety, Health & Environment for Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), emphasizes the importance of energy efficiency and water conservation in Africa. Mortimer highlights that Weir's most energy-intensive operations are its manufacturing plants and foundries, and the company is actively working to lower their carbon footprint.

Weir's sustainability goals involve using less energy, conserving water, and minimizing waste at every site, region, and globally. This commitment is being realized through clearly defined targets at site, regional, and global levels.

Community engagement is a vital part of Weir's ESG commitments. The well-being of local communities and the company are closely connected, particularly in African countries facing economic challenges. Weir's service centres and local sites play a key role in driving community initiatives, aiming to make a positive impact wherever the company operates.

In addition to its renewable energy initiatives, Weir's solutions and equipment are designed to help mining customers operate efficiently, supporting the global energy transition. The company's equipment is designed to help customers operate at peak efficiency, reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Weir's sustainability efforts in Africa are part of a broader global strategy. The company aims to achieve its sustainability goals with active participation from all regions and sites across its global footprint. This includes a strong drive towards renewable energy adoption to reduce reliance on carbon-intensive electricity sources, and a commitment to community engagement and local impact.
