National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), a company set up to produce electric cars, has taken a significant step forward in its mission. The company, currently based in China, has announced plans to reintroduce the iconic Saab 9-3 as an electric vehicle (EV) in Sweden and build a second production facility in China, with a possible additional plant in Turkey.

The decision comes after NEVS received an order from China Volant Industry Co. for 20,000 electric Saab 9-3s, worth £700 million. This order, combined with previously known orders, brings the total value of orders received by NEVS to approximately £1.4 billion. The total number of orders stands at around 170,000 cars.

The new Saab 9-3 EV, which will not carry the Saab brand, is being produced in Sweden. The top speed of this electric vehicle is 87mph, and it is expected to deliver 186 miles on a single charge.

NEVS' factory in China, with a capacity to produce up to 220,000 cars per year, has already been put to use. The company plans to start building cars at Saab's Trollhattan Plant in the second half of 2018.

In addition to the Chinese market, NEVS has been making strides in the ride-sharing sector in China. The company has received orders for approximately 300,000 electric cars from ride-sharing firms in the country.

Turkey, too, is looking to build an electric car that is better than a Tesla, and NEVS might find itself in a prime position to contribute to this ambitious goal, given its expanding presence in the electric vehicle market.

The sale of a substantial portion of Saab assets to National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) has been confirmed, further solidifying the company's commitment to reviving the iconic Saab brand. The Saab 9-3, once a symbol of Swedish engineering excellence, is set to make a comeback as an electric vehicle, bearing the NEVS badge.
