In a significant development, Turkey's Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, announced on December 8, 2024, that over 1.2 million Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned to Syria from Turkey since 2016. This figure includes the recent surge of 474,018 Syrians who have returned home since December 8, 2024, alone.

The voluntary repatriation process is being coordinated by Turkey's Migration Management Presidency, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Erdoğan's administration has been commended for its exemplary migration management model, facilitating voluntary return.

Minister Yerlikaya made the announcement on the social media platform X, emphasising that the process is being carried out with great sensitivity. He also reiterated Turkey's continued support for Syrian refugees during the repatriation process.

The increase in Syrian refugees returning home has been attributed to certain developments in Syria after December 8, 2024, though Yerlikaya did not specify the nature of these developments. It is worth noting that the formation of a new interim government in Syria may have contributed to this trend.

The repatriation process continues, with Syrians continuing to return to their home country through border crossings. The surge in returns has coincided with an increase in border capacity, facilitating a smoother process.

Turkey presents an exemplary model to the world with its historical experience, humanitarian approach, and rational perspective in migration management. The ongoing repatriation of Syrian refugees is a testament to Turkey's commitment to its refugees and its dedication to finding lasting solutions for those displaced by conflict.

As the repatriation process continues, it is expected that more Syrian refugees will return to their homeland, seeking to rebuild their lives and communities. The Turkish government will continue to support these efforts, ensuring a safe and orderly process for all involved.
