Texas Football Suffers First Loss of the Season, Drawing Criticism for Coach Sarkisian

The Texas Longhorns suffered a disappointing 14-7 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in their season opener, a result that has sparked criticism towards head coach Steve Sarkisian's play-calling.

The criticism, led by analyst Paul Finebaum on ESPN's "Get Up," centres around Sarkisian's game plan and specific play-calling decisions. Finebaum expressed concerns about Sarkisian's performance in the Cotton Bowl game, citing a similar issue in the final drive that resulted in a touchdown for the opposing team.

Finebaum's concerns stem from the high standards set for Sarkisian, given that Texas was ranked the No. 1 team in the country heading into the season. The analyst believes that Sarkisian has been overhyped and needs to deliver an urgent message to the team to live up to these expectations.

Former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky also joined the chorus of critics, particularly focusing on Sarkisian's use of quarterback runs, perimeter screens, and running the football. Orlovsky felt there was too much reliance on running plays, resulting in Texas' down in distance being seven-plus on third down.

Despite his admiration for Sarkisian, Orlovsky found the loss to the Buckeyes very disappointing. Many analysts believe Sarkisian needs to improve tremendously beyond the frustrating aspects of star quarterback Arch Manning's rough outing against Ohio State.

The Texas football team will have a chance to get a win in the column as they take on San Jose State next Saturday. Sarkisian, a respected name in college football, will need to address the concerns and find a way to lead the team to victory.

The Longhorns started the season 0-1, a result that may have many questioning whether they were overhyped as the No. 1 team in the nation. However, with a new week comes new opportunities, and Sarkisian and the Texas football team will be looking to bounce back strong against San Jose State.
