Team Mariners make Dylan Moore available for other clubs with unconditional waiver release.
Dylan Moore, the longest-tenured player for the Seattle Mariners, finds himself in a new chapter of his career after being placed on unconditional release waivers by the team on Sunday.
Moore, aged 33, has spent over seven seasons with the Mariners, appearing in 671 games across various positions except catcher. During his tenure, he accumulated a total of 7.2 Wins Above Replacement (Baseball Reference), posting a .205/.310/.381 slash line, 82 doubles, 11 triples, 61 homers, 192 RBI, and 116 stolen bases. In 2024, Moore won the American League Gold Glove for utility player.
Moore's defensive versatility and speed have always made him an attractive prospect for potential teams. However, his recent struggles at the plate, particularly in May and June, may affect his chances of securing a major league contract. In April, Moore had a strong start with a .286/.346/.557 slash line, 78 plate appearances, 6 homers, 9 RBI, and 5 stolen bases. However, his production began to decline after a three-hit game against the Nationals on May 27, with just 3 hits in his next 74 plate appearances, 38 strikeouts, and 7 walks.
If no team claims Moore off waivers, he will not be outrighted to the minor league system. Instead, he will become a free agent and can sign with any team he chooses, including teams that may offer him a minor-league contract. Under the collective bargaining agreement, a player who is designated for assignment and later clears waivers can refuse an outright assignment to the minor leagues, thanks to Moore's Major League service time.
Moore's representatives have stated that he had no interest in going to Tacoma to play. After being released by the Mariners, he was swiftly signed by the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite his struggles, it's expected that a team may take a chance on Moore for his defensive versatility and speed.
In the end, the Mariners' decision to put Moore on unconditional release waivers indicates their intention to part ways with him. Moore's future in the Major Leagues remains uncertain, but his talent and potential could still make him an attractive option for a team seeking a defensive-minded player with speed.
Update: After being released by the Seattle Mariners, Dylan Moore has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. The details of his contract have not been disclosed.
