The German basketball team has secured a spot in the knockout round of the European Championship 2023, following five consecutive wins in the group stage. Led by Head Coach Alex Mumbru and NBA star Franz Wagner, the team defeated hosts Finland with a convincing score of 91:61 (50:36).

In their final group game, Wagner led the charge, scoring 23 points. At halftime, he had already amassed 15 points, setting the tone for a strong second half. The team pulled away from Finland, leading at times, to secure the victory.

The road to the knockout round was not without challenges. Co-captain Johannes Voigtmann is out for the rest of the tournament due to a knee operation. However, Mumbru, who spent five nights in the hospital with an acute abdomen issue, is on the mend and could return to the sidelines as early as the game against Portugal.

The team's journey continues in Riga, Latvia, where they will face Portugal in the round of 16 on Saturday. The Portuguese team secured their ticket to the round of 16 with a 68:65 win over Estonia.

The German team had no real test in the group stage, but they will face a more challenging opponent in the knockout round. They will not face a genuine medal contender until the quarterfinals at the earliest.

Before the game against Finland, nearly 13,000 fans displayed a show of solidarity against racism, with red cards bearing the message "Stop racism" on every seat.

Assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic led the team in the final group game, and the team will travel to Riga together with Portugal on Thursday. The German team, with their strong offensive plays and determination, will be looking to continue their winning streak in the knockout round.
