Teaser for the forthcoming Volkswagen Jetta debut at Detroit auto show; uncertainty remains about its potential availability in the UK market

The Volkswagen Jetta, a staple in the automotive world for nearly four decades, is about to undergo a significant transformation. The seventh generation of this iconic model will make its debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

First introduced as a boot version of the Golf, the Jetta has since carved out its own niche. However, the new Jetta will be based on the VW MQB Platform, signalling a shift in its design and performance.

The facelifted Jetta will boast small cosmetic tweaks, a revised engines lineup, and improved aerodynamics. One of the most exciting developments is the unveiling of the Jetta Hybrid at the Detroit Auto Show. This hybrid model features a 1.4 litre turbo and electric motor, promising 54mpg and 168bhp.

The design of the new Jetta seems to be influenced by the Arteon, offering a sleek and modern look. This redesign is a clear indication of Volkswagen's commitment to creating a more dynamic and contemporary Jetta.

Interestingly, the Jetta will no longer be available in the UK and Germany due to changing market preferences. With the rise of hatchbacks and SUVs/crossovers, the Jetta has fallen out of favor, with Volkswagen selling only one Jetta a day in the UK. In contrast, the Jetta remains viable in the United States due to steady demand.

The decision to discontinue the Jetta in these markets reflects a strategic shift towards electric and SUV models. However, it's unclear whether the Jetta was dropped due to slow sales in the UK or as part of a planned re-launch for the seventh generation.

The 2011 version of the VW Jetta was launched, featuring a makeover to distinguish it from the Golf with a boot. This facelifted version debuted at the New York Auto Show for the 2015 model year. The new Jetta is expected to feature new TSI EVO petrol engines, further enhancing its performance.

The debut of the new Jetta at the Detroit Motor Show suggests a potential relaunch of the model. As we wait for more details, it's clear that the Jetta is set to make a comeback, offering a fresh take on a classic vehicle.
