Teenager, who was previously convicted for the 2021 murder in Fresno, granted probation instead of prison; relatives call for modifications in the justice system.

In a turn of events that has sparked controversy, a 17-year-old, whose identity remains undisclosed due to being a minor at the time of the incident, was released from custody late last month. This individual was convicted of murder in the tragic death of Sergio Bonboster, a 20-year-old man who was killed in October 2021.

The details surrounding the case are still shrouded in mystery, with no public information or credible sources confirming the 17-year-old's involvement in the murder. However, it is known that her 17-year-old girlfriend, whose name has not been disclosed, is the one who allegedly stabbed Sergio to death. Her roommate, Lawrence Madrid, who was Sergio's roommate, is said to have helped mutilate his body and dump it in a canal.

The family of Sergio Bonboster, including his sister, Savannah, and his younger brother, Sabastian, have been vocal about their disappointment with the justice system. Savannah has expressed her belief that opportunities were given to the 17-year-old without due consideration of her actions.

The family has taken a stand, participating in a protest last week alongside District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp and other families. They maintain that a memorial is a place where people feel connected to Sergio, and a memorial has been maintained by family and friends at the location where his body was found.

In a show of unity, the family is focusing on living to make Sergio proud. Savannah believes that standing united is important for bringing about change.

The 17-year-old, now on probation, was sentenced to a maximum term of under four years. However, the details of her probation restrictions couldn't be confirmed due to her being convicted as a minor. It was revealed in an August hearing that she is currently attending college. As a result, she will now be able to attend college in person.

Proposition 57, which focuses on rehabilitation, may have played a role in the teenager's release. However, the specifics of her case and the preliminary hearing for Madrid and his girlfriend remain undisclosed.

As the family continues to grieve and advocate for change, the community waits for further developments in this tragic case.
