Telecommunications giant AT&T agrees to purchase spectrum licenses worth $23 billion from EchoStar.
In a significant move for the wireless industry, EchoStar, the company behind Boost Mobile, has agreed to sell its 3.45 GHz and 600 MHz spectrum licenses to AT&T for approximately $23 billion. The acquisition, set to be completed by mid-2026, will add an average of approximately 50 MHz of low-band and mid-band spectrum to AT&T's holdings, covering virtually every market across the U.S.
The deal, which has major implications for the wireless business, is likely to also have an impact on cable operators and broadband providers. It weakens the position of these competitors for negotiating Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deals for their own wireless services, as it reduces the main wireless players to three- T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.
For EchoStar, the transaction puts their business on a solid financial path and enhances their ability to innovate and compete as a hybrid network operator. The sale will help EchoStar pay down debt and refocus its operations. EchoStar will continue to participate in the wireless industry through a long-term wholesale network services agreement with AT&T for Boost Mobile's service.
Subscribers will experience no interruptions to service due to this transaction. Customers will continue to receive service from Boost Mobile's cloud-native 5G core connected to AT&T's nationwide network. Boost Mobile subscribers will also continue to have access to the T-Mobile network in addition to AT&T's towers.
Over time, elements of Boost Mobile's radio access network (RAN) will be decommissioned. EchoStar is evaluating strategic opportunities for its remaining spectrum portfolio in partnership with the U.S. government and wireless industry participants.
The acquisition strengthens AT&T's position in the 5G and home internet business. Customers can expect improved 5G coverage and faster internet speeds as a result of the deal. It also creates increased competition for cable operators and broadband providers' broadband and wireless services, as it strengthens AT&T's ability to provide both 5G and home internet services.
The sale of EchoStar's spectrum to AT&T addresses the FCC's spectrum utilization concerns. The deal ends EchoStar's dreams of becoming a major wireless, 5G provider. It also resolves the current FCC investigation that had raised fears of a potential bankruptcy for EchoStar.
Elon Musk, who has been trying to get the FCC take away some of EchoStar's licenses, may find himself in a more challenging position with this acquisition. However, it is not ruled out that EchoStar may retain a smaller, but significant package of spectrum that it could potentially sell to companies like Verizon or Musk's SpaceX.
In conclusion, the acquisition of the 3.45 GHz and 600 MHz spectrum licenses from EchoStar by AT&T is a significant move for the wireless industry. It strengthens AT&T's position in the 5G and home internet market, creates increased competition, and addresses the FCC's spectrum utilization concerns.
