Ricardo Medina, a renowned figure in Spanish journalism, has sadly passed away at the age of 67 in Madrid. Medina was a trailblazer in the industry, known for his innovative television formats and his dedication to the medium.

Medina began his career as a delegate of the EFE Agency in El Salvador, where he started his almost decade-long experience as a war correspondent. He covered some of the most significant conflicts of his time, including those in Guatemala, Haiti, Rwanda, Sarajevo, and the Gulf War.

In 1989, Medina returned to Spain and joined the founding team of Telemadrid, where he coordinated news programs and special programs. He held the position of Head of Sports for five years before designing and launching the Master of Television of the Complutense University of Madrid and Telemadrid in 1999.

Medina's tenure at Telemadrid saw the creation of groundbreaking daily live news formats that left an indelible mark on Spanish public television. These included 'España Directo', 'La Mañana de La 1', and the 3D magazine of Antena 3. 'Madrid Directo' became the "flagship" of Telemadrid and was adapted to all regional televisions in Spain, among others, Andalusia, with 'Andalucía Directo'.

In 2001, Medina left Telemadrid and launched Canal Metro Madrid, where he was the first General Director. In 2004, he launched his own production company, Medina Media, which later became part of the Medina Media Global business group. He was a pioneer in introducing branded content to Spanish Television with programs like The Soul of the Companies and Connecting Spain.

Later in his career, Medina worked in other American delegations as Director of the EFE Agency's Caribbean delegation and on the 24 All News Channel of Puerto Rico. He also directed and produced Aquí un Amigo, the interview program hosted by Luis del Val on Aragón TV.

For over a decade, Medina served as Executive Producer of debates on Canal Sur and travel programs such as Andalusians Around the World, Andalusians in Europe, Andalusians in Spain, and Andalusians in America. In 2006, he launched the same travel format under the name Aragonese Around the World on Aragón TV.

In 2003, Medina moved to Andalusia, where he continued his prolific career. On November 21, 2024, he received the 2023 Specialized Journalism APM Award from Queen Letizia for the 30 years of 'Madrid Directo'.

Ricardo Medina was an exemplary leader, a close colleague, and a committed person, according to his production company. The Television Academy has lamented the "sudden loss" of Medina, a "great professional, committed to the medium and with a brilliant career in the audiovisual world". His contributions to Spanish journalism will undoubtedly be remembered and celebrated for years to come.
