Rising Stars Shine in Formula E Rookie Test at Tempelhof Airport
In a thrilling display of electric racing talent, the Formula E Rookie Test took place at the historic Tempelhof Airport circuit on May 14, 2023. The event, part of development programs for teams and offering opportunities for drivers to accelerate their careers, saw 22 participants drive the GEN3 Evo model – the most technologically-advanced electric single-seater race car built to date.
The day was marked by close competition, with all drivers separated by barely one-and-a-half seconds, reflecting Formula E's close and competitive nature. One of the standout performances came from Gabriele Minì, who clinched the victory and the title of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship's Rookie Test.
Minì ended the day with the fastest time, improving his time by 0.016s in the morning and 0.02s in the afternoon. Kush Maini put up a strong fight, ending the day in third place, 0.005s ahead of his morning position. Elia Weiss, at 16, became the youngest driver ever to pilot a Formula E car in an official session, finishing just 1.255s behind Minì.
Oliver Rowland, who clinched the Season 11 crown 24 hours before the Rookie Test, also participated in the event. The 2023 Formula 2 champion Théo Pourchaire placed tenth for Maserati MSG Racing. Alex Dunne ended up sixth for NEOM McLaren Formula E Team after leading the way in the afternoon.
Jamie Chadwick (Jaguar TCS Racing), Abbi Pulling (Nissan), Bianca Bustamante (CUPRA Kiro), and Ella Lloyd (McLaren) all gained crucial experience during the test. Notable mentions go to Ayhancan Güven, who finished the second session in second place for TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, and Arthur Leclerc, younger brother of Ferrari Formula 1 star Charles Leclerc, who finished in 13th place for Maserati MSG Racing.
Previous tests have launched the careers of several talented drivers. The Formula E Rookie Test at Tempelhof Airport not only provided an opportunity for the next generation of racers to showcase their skills but also offered a glimpse into the future of electric racing.
