Temporary Closure of Emergency Housing in Schierling
In the Regensburg district, the town of Schierling is making strides in the integration of asylum seekers into the local labor market. The district, which previously had five emergency shelters, has now reduced this number to one, with the emergency shelter at Gewerbering 29 continuing to accommodate up to 50 residents.
The residents of the emergency shelter at Gewerbering 29 hail from Syria, Iran, and Ethiopia. Since December 2022, a network of regional companies and representatives of the Regensburg district office has developed in Schierling to mediate assistance and skilled workers. However, the specific companies involved have not been explicitly named in the available sources.
District Administrator Tanja Schweiger emphasises the importance of this network in addressing the challenges of integrating asylum seekers into the local labor market. Good contacts with the local economy, particularly with the personnel departments of companies, are key to placing people from accommodations in suitable jobs. The district office places people from accommodations in suitable jobs in Schierling, considering the qualifications of the applicants and the specific needs of the companies.
The emergency shelter at Gewerbering 29 will remain a reserve from October 1, 2025, but the remaining residents will be distributed to the NUK Schierling on Seefeldstraße and decentralized accommodations in the district. The residents are being encouraged to find private housing and leave state accommodation.
Schierling serves as a positive example in the successful integration of asylum seekers into the local labor market. However, the Regensburg district continues to face challenges in this area. District Administrator Tanja Schweiger expresses gratitude for the peaceful coexistence in Schierling during asylum accommodation and emphasises the importance of continued efforts to integrate asylum seekers into the community.
The development of this network in Schierling since December 2022 is significant for the integration of asylum seekers into the local labor market. Nineteen residents of the emergency shelter at Gewerbering 29 have received protection status from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, a testament to the success of the integration efforts in Schierling.
