Temporary road blockage for 12 weeks due to ongoing building works at Karlsruhe's permanent construction site
The L 558 bridge connecting Linkenheim-Hochstetten and Stutensee-Friedrichstal in Karlsruhe is closed for a twelve-week renovation, starting from Monday, August 11. The closure affects all commuters, including car, truck, and cyclist traffic.
The renovation project, commissioned by the City of Karlsruhe, aims to make the aging crossing fit for the future. The total project in Karlsruhe, including both overpasses, is budgeted at approximately 1.1 million euros, with the federal government covering the costs.
For cars and trucks traveling from Linkenheim towards Karlsruhe, the recommended detour is via the northern on-ramp of the B36. Those going to Mannheim from Friedrichstal can use the local on-ramp, with those heading to Karlsruhe advised to use the detour via Leopoldshafen. For commuters from Mannheim heading towards Linkenheim, the suggested detour is via the Hochstetten on-ramp.
The renovation work will significantly change daily routes in the Karlsruhe region. The project includes the demolition and rebuilding of the bridge caps, renewal of the sealing, and replacement of the asphalt roadway. Additionally, the renovation work will extend beyond the bridge itself, affecting adjacent areas up to the next intersections.
From August 12 to 19, the B36 will be affected as drainage pipes under the bridge are renewed, and scaffolding for work on the superstructure will be erected, leaving one lane open in each direction. After this initial phase, the bridge will be completely closed for the remainder of the renovation period.
Cyclists and pedestrians can use the KIT Campus North to reach the nearest southern bridge as an alternative route. The regional government expects a good distribution of traffic onto the detour routes.
The renovation work on the neighboring L 559 overpass in Leopoldshafen will soon begin, leading to single-lane traffic in each direction. This work is expected to cause congestion, particularly during the summer holidays. However, the renovation work is expected to result in an autumn without construction sites.
The goal of the renovation is to ensure the longevity of these important crossings, providing a safe and reliable route for commuters in the Karlsruhe region. The Karlsruhe Regional Government is carrying out the renovation project. Detours for cars, trucks, and cyclists are available and should be used during the bridge closure. After the summer holidays, the closure could be a test of patience for commuters, but the renovation work is expected to bring long-term benefits.
