Barbora Krejcikova Advances to U.S. Open Quarter-Finals After Dramatic Win Over Taylor Townsend

In a thrilling three-hour-long match, Barbora Krejcikova secured her place in the U.S. Open quarter-finals, defeating Taylor Townsend with a score of 1-6 7-6(13) 6-3. The contest was filled with tense moments, breakthroughs, and a record-breaking tiebreak.

Townsend, who never lost her serve during the match, started strongly, breaking Krejcikova twice early on. However, Krejcikova's errors initially made Townsend's path easier. As the match progressed, Krejcikova began to find her rhythm, breaking Townsend to win the second set and force a tiebreak.

The tiebreak was a rollercoaster, with both players trading holds and squandering match points. Townsend earned three triple match points, but Krejcikova saved one to stay in the contest. Krejcikova, in turn, squandered three set points of her own, extending the tiebreak to a nerve-wracking 25 minutes, making it the longest tiebreak of the tournament so far.

In the end, it was Krejcikova who emerged victorious, converting her fourth set point with an overhead smash to win the tiebreak 15-13. Townsend, left in tears, commented on the match, saying, "It hurts, but it's part of competition, it's part of sports. But I'm right where I need to be." She also expressed pride in her performance, despite the loss.

Krejcikova's resilience paid off as she saved eight match points during the match. She will face Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals, having already met Pegula in the US Open 2022 semifinals. The third set saw the pair trading breaks until Krejcikova seized the upper hand to serve for the match.

As the tournament continues, Krejcikova will look to build on this dramatic victory and continue her quest for the U.S. Open title.
