Tennis ace Oda clinches career Grand Slam victory at U.S. Open tournament
Japanese Wheelchair Tennis Stars Shine at U.S. Open
In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Japanese wheelchair tennis players Tokito Oda and Yui Kamiji made history at the U.S. Open.
Tokito Oda, just 19 years old, clinched his seventh Grand Slam singles title, becoming the youngest player to achieve this feat in the history of wheelchair tennis. After a gruelling final match against Gustavo Fernandez, Oda triumphed with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (13/11). The victory also saw Oda complete the career golden Slam, joining an elite group of players who have won all four major Grand Slam titles.
Meanwhile, Yui Kamiji, another Japanese tennis star, secured her 11th Grand Slam singles title with her win at the U.S. Open. However, unlike Oda, Kamiji's victory did not mark a career golden Slam. In the final, Kamiji faced Li Xiaohui from China, and the match ended in a close 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory for Kamiji.
In the doubles category, Oda teamed up with Fernandez to win the men's wheelchair doubles title on Friday. The details of Kamiji's doubles partner for the U.S. Open are not yet available.
The U.S. Open triumph did not secure Oda a gold medal at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, but it did add to his impressive resume. Oda had previously won gold at the French Open and Wimbledon this year. On the other hand, Kamiji's U.S. Open victory did not lead to a Paralympic gold either, as she had already won gold at the Australian Open this year. Her only loss this season in the Grand Slam tournaments was to Britain's Alfie Hewett in the Australian Open final.
Both Oda and Kamiji expressed their joy and relief after their respective victories. Oda stated that he felt amazing after winning the U.S. Open, while Kamiji expressed her delight at securing another Grand Slam title. As for their future plans, the coach for Kamiji's 2024 US Open Women's Wheelchair Tennis competition is yet to be announced.
The U.S. Open marked a successful outing for Japanese wheelchair tennis, with Oda and Kamiji continuing their dominance in the sport. Their performances are a testament to their hard work, dedication, and love for the game.
