Tennis prodigy Coco Gauff exhibits relaxed performance at the U.S. Open, advancing to duel with Naomi Osaka in the upcoming match
In a highly anticipated match-up, teen sensation Coco Gauff and three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka will face off in the fourth round of the 2023 U.S. Open.
Gauff, who reached the fourth round of the tournament for the first time, has been in impressive form. She defeated No. 28 Magdalena Frech of Poland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Gauff's serve was a pivotal point in the match, as she averaged 98 mph and didn't double-fault once. She also improved significantly on her serving issues, a problem that has plagued her throughout the season.
Gauff's serve speed peaked at 113 mph, and she put in 76% of her first serves during the match. Her return, defense, and play once the ball was in play were all strengths. Gauff broke Frech five times during the match and took 35 of the 51 points when their baseline exchanges lasted more than four shots.
Gauff's improved serve was no accident. She brought aboard biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan, known for helping Aryna Sabalenka improve her serve, to fix her service issues before the 2025 US Open. The hard work seems to be paying off, as Gauff's double-fault count has significantly reduced. In her title defense at the 2024 U.S. Open, she had 19 double-faults, a marked improvement from her four double-faults in the match against Frech.
On the other side of the net, Osaka moved into the fourth round of the tournament. She defeated No. 15 Daria Kasatkina in straight sets. Osaka, who won titles in New York in 2018 and 2020, last got to the fourth round at any major at the 2021 Australian Open.
This will be the second time these two players meet at the U.S. Open. In 2019, Osaka defeated Gauff in the third round. Given Gauff's impressive form and Osaka's recent struggles, this match promises to be a thrilling encounter.
