Tennis pros Zverev and Bencic commence mixed doubles competition at the US Open, advance early in tournament
In an unexpected turn of events, tennis stars Alexander Zverev and Belinda Bencic experienced an early exit from the US Open mixed doubles competition. The mid-week event, held over just two days (August 19 and 20), saw a total of 16 teams vying for the title.
The pair, who won Olympic gold in 2021, lost in the first round to Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison with a score of 0:4, 3:5. The match, played in the main stadiums with shortened sets, was a tough one for Zverev and Bencic, who seemed to be dealing with physical issues from Zverev's run at the Masters-1000 tournament in Cincinnati.
Their opponents, Collins and Harrison, replaced Zverev and Bencic's original mixed doubles opponents after Jannik Sinner withdrew due to health issues. The second round match between Collins/Harrison and Bencic/Zverev took place on August 19, 2025.
The competition's new format, which includes eight wildcard spots, has been met with criticism. Doubles specialists have expressed dismay at the schedule, which does not align with the main draw of the Grand Slam tournament. The heat in Ohio also took a toll on both Zverev and Bencic, who pushed their physical limits during the match.
Despite their loss, the prize money for the winning team has been increased to one million US dollars, adding an exciting incentive to the competition. Zverev and Bencic, who have known each other since childhood, will regroup and focus on their respective singles competitions, which begin next Sunday.
As the tennis world turns its attention to the main event, the mixed doubles competition serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of sports and the resilience required to compete at the highest level.
