Tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz secures a place alongside Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic by triumphing in the US Open, cementing his spot in an elite group.
Carlos Alcaraz has added another major trophy to his growing collection, winning the US Open 2022 and securing his return to the world No. 1 tennis ranking. The Spanish sensation defeated Italy's Jannik Sinner in a thrilling four-set encounter, marking his second Grand Slam title of the year and the second year in a row he has won at least two.
Alcaraz and Sinner have been locked in a fierce rivalry, with their encounters becoming some of the most anticipated matches in the men's singles landscape. The US Open final was just the latest chapter in their rivalry, with Alcaraz claiming revenge after losing to Sinner at Wimbledon in July.
The final was a record-breaking match, lasting 4 hours and 8 minutes. It was the second Grand Slam showpiece for the two young stars, following their thrilling five-set French Open final in June. Alcaraz emerged victorious, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
With this victory, Alcaraz has now won two Grand Slam titles in a row, both in the year 2022. He has also joined an exclusive club of seven men in the Open Era who have won three different Grand Slam titles on at least two occasions. John McEnroe and Pete Sampras are also part of this prestigious group.
Alcaraz's US Open victory makes him the second player in history to beat the world ATP no. 1 in multiple Grand Slam finals in a season. He is also the third player in Open Era history to win multiple titles in the US Open men's singles event before turning 23.
Carlos Alcaraz's impressive run has seen him win the second-most Grand Slams before the age of 23, tying with Nadal and being one behind Bjorn Borg. His victory on Sunday ended Sinner's reign and marked Alcaraz as the second youngest man in the Open Era to win six Grand Slams.
During his celebrations, Alcaraz performed a golf swing, a nod to his love for the sport. He previously did so in front of Rory McIlroy. The Spanish star took home a prize of 5 million US dollars for his efforts.
Alcaraz's US Open triumph comes as he continues to dominate the men's singles scene. He currently stands at 10-5 against Sinner, with US Open glory just the latest achievement to add to his extensive list of accolades.
With his victory, Alcaraz has become the first player to win more than one Grand Slam title on all three surfaces before the age of 23. The young Spaniard has truly established himself as one of the greatest tennis players of his generation.
