Tennis star Sabalenka advances to US Open final, facing off against Osaka and her rival Anisimova
Aryna Sabalenka is one step away from making history at the US Open after securing her place in the final. The current world number one faced a tough challenge in the semi-finals, but managed to come out on top.
In a repeat of last year's final, Sabalenka faced off against Jessica Pegula. After winning the first set, Sabalenka found herself trailing in the second set, but showed resilience to fight back and level the match. The decider was a tense affair, with Sabalenka facing multiple break points, but she managed to save them all, eventually clinching the set and the match with a crunching forehand winner.
Sabalenka's opponent in the final will either be Naomi Osaka or Amanda Anisimova. Osaka, who has won four major crowns in her career, is enjoying her best run at a major since winning her second Australian Open title in 2021. On the other hand, Anisimova, who took an eight-month break from tennis in 2023 due to depression brought on by being a teen prodigy, avenged her loss to Swiatek and ousted the second-seeded Pole in the quarterfinals.
Osaka considers Anisimova as one of the most talented players on tour, and the semi-final match between the two will be highly anticipated. The match is scheduled for later on Thursday.
Sabalenka is seeking to become the first player to win consecutive singles titles in New York since Serena Williams. She won the US Open in 2024, but has not added to her haul of three majors since then. The Belarusian has made the final at four of the last five Grand Slams, and will be keen to add another major title to her collection.
Anisimova, who dropped outside the top 400 last year but broke into the top 10 after her run to the Wimbledon final two months ago, will provide a tough challenge for Sabalenka. The American has shown great form this tournament, and will be determined to claim the title.
Regardless of who Sabalenka faces in the final, she will be confident of her chances. The Belarusian has shown great mental strength throughout the tournament, and will be eager to add another major title to her collection. The final is scheduled for Saturday, and promises to be a thrilling affair.
