Tensions escalate at the Polish-Hungarian border
On Friday evening, the 16th of November, 2024, a significant drug-related incident unfolded on the A7 motorway near Hannover. The Police Inspectorate Heidekreis led a comprehensive traffic control operation at the rest area "Vorm Wietzenbruch".
Deployment forces from the Police Directorate Hannover, the Police Directorate Oldenburg, and the Hauptzollamt Hannover were all involved in the operation. Traffic on the A7 heading towards Hannover was rerouted to the rest area, where it was selectively controlled.
During the operation, a total of 181 vehicles were checked, and 229 individuals were scrutinised. The control forces seized over a kilogram of marijuana from a car driven by a 33-year-old, which was discovered packed in three sports bags in the trunk.
The driver of the rental vehicle submitted to a urine test, which tested positive for THC. However, the control forces did not report any arrests related to the marijuana seizure, aside from the possession of marijuana.
Numerous violations were detected during the action, and eight people had to provide a blood sample. The control forces did not disclose the identity of the rental car company involved in the seizure, nor the identity of the drivers.
In an unrelated incident on September 16, 2025, during a police search of a vehicle on the A7, authorities confiscated about a kilogram of marijuana, as well as ecstasy and hashish, from a 33-year-old whose identity was not disclosed in the initial operation.
The Police Inspectorate Heidekreis did not disclose the total number of vehicles or people checked in relation to the marijuana seizure, nor the number of violations detected in relation to the marijuana seizure, aside from the possession of marijuana.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug activities on German roads and highways. The authorities continue to work diligently to ensure the safety and security of the public.
